It’s been a steady climb up the corporate ladder for Institute of Management Technology Ghaziabad alumnus Ankur Poddar.

Ankur opted to take his MBA in human resources at IMT Ghaziabad and after graduation became assistant manager in business human relations at Bank of America Continuum Solutions. Within three years there Ankur moved to his current position as divisional (north) human resources manager at Marico.

“I never looked at a parameter for my growth or my journey; it’s always been the learning and handling the bigger portfolio and bigger responsibility,” he said.

Anyone setting his sights on a career in human resources has to be employee-friendly, mentioned Ankur on being asked the most important quality that a Human Resource person needs to internalise. “Understand the value of staff, be trustworthy and conduct himself accordingly.”

And while loyalty, contribution and focus are all important, he believes ethics are key above all. “Nobody can climb the ladder in the corporate world without ethics,” he said. “At every level there is a check.”

People are at the core of any corporation – they make the difference in any company and give it its competitive advantage, he said. The human resources department virtually controls the quality of people who are employed by a business, whether it is recruiting them, developing staff, or evaluating their performance. And maintaining the right work environment along with maintaining highly-qualified manpower is also a key function of human resources. “It is a big pool and one can survive only if one’s vision and mission to choose such a career is clear” remarked Ankur enthusiastically.

“Summer internship is one forum where we chart an initial image of a candidate – whether this guy can fit into the company culture or not, or whether he can be a long-term contributor or not,” he said.

Attitude is a key trait in an employee, and attitude is something that can’t be assessed in the short time frame of a campus interview. Getting a handle on a potential employee’s attitude is something that requires time and observation during an internship, where the prospective employee is interacting with others inside and outside the company.
