Institute of Management Technology Ghaziabad, Nagpur Organizes Convocation 2010
New Delhi, March 20, 2010 – India’s leading Business schools, Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Ghaziabad and Nagpur jointly organized Convocation 2010 on March 20, 2010. The Chief Guest was Dr. Vijay Mallya, Chairman UB Group, and the function was presided over by Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India and President Board of Governors, Institute of Management Technology. Other dignitaries gracing the occasion were Mr. Bakul Nath, Vice-President, IMT, Dr. Anwar Ali, Director IMT, Ghaziabad and Dr. Rajendra Naragundkar, Director, IMT, Nagpur.
Dr. Vijay Mallya in the convocation address stressed on the importance of self – confidence and creative thinking in his convocation address. He urged the students to believe in themselves and face the world with self – confidence. He said that India offered the largest unique opportunity for development considering the fact that India has a very young average age demographically. He said that the future of the country lay on the students. For young energetic minds, now being trained to think by faculty, collective knowledge of both experience and innovation is necessary. He stressed on the need to build upon this foundation that the outgoing batch has been fortunate enough to get. He gave the examples of business barons like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs from the west and Dhirubhai Ambani and Sunil Mittal from India as people who could build huge business empires only due to their out –of – the – box thinking and the ability to take calculated business risks. He gave the example of Kingfisher’s strategy. Although advertising alcohol is banned in India, Kingfisher has been able to achieve the status of being the largest home – grown indigenous brand sold in over 55 countries. That has become possible because Kingfisher has been into everything that will appeal to the young, upwardly mobile and the generation next. Kingfisher has forayed into sports, fashion and has been branded with a distinct brand personality.
Dr. Mallya said that we must talk to a brand and the brand needs to talk to us. Visual image is important but a brand should be a visual communicator. This is what differentiates a brand from a super brand. As put forward by Dr. Mallya, “Life is full of challenges to let u down. Don’t allow whatever you and your parents have put in you go to waste due to a few stumbling blocks along the way. Learn from every mistake. Keep confidence. Think creatively, think outside the box. Think of how u can do things differently. A pattern of following an icon, an idol is not the only way. Challenge is something that you need to look forward to not get daunted by it. If you have the self confidence, ability to believe in yourself, go for it”. He also said that Indians were truly smarter than the people in the west, just that we are better servants than masters. He urged the students to change that attitude and let someone else do the donkey work and that is where self – confidence pays off.
“Please be leaders. Don’t be followers. You can create, you can innovate. The fundamental requirement is confidence in you. Let your confidence be your biggest strength. And let your creative mind think out of the box. If u do it, this country is in very safe hands with youngsters like you.” were Dr. Mallya’s concluding statements.
Shri Kamal Nath mentioned that the global economy is just about recovering from one of the worst recessions it has experienced in eight decades – some economists say: the worst recession, period. Whichever way one looks at it, it is undeniable that the last two and a half years mark an inflection point – the post-recession world that we shall experience, in economic terms, is unlikely to resemble the world that preceded the recession.
It says something profound for India that, in spite of 19 years of globalization, the Indian economy has escaped relatively unscathed, and has even grown, while economies in the developed world have actually shrunk. While government policy of calibrated liberalization accounts for one part of the story, it is increasingly being recognized that Indian managers, and the skills and abilities they bring to bear on their work, are responsible in no small measure for this fortunate outcome.
Management pundits of international renown are acknowledging that a distinctive Indian model of management and business is emerging – not through any deliberate or pre-designed effort, but rather through the innovative interaction and robust response of Indian managers to the new challenges – an interaction and a response that is based on certain core and typical Indian values, attitudes and skills. IMT is proud to be part of this unique response, and even, in some small but significant measure, to have shaped it.
