IMT bags wins at NMIMS’s flagship marketing event

“Last Marketer Standing” is the flagship event of the marketing cell of Narsee Monjee, Mumbai. With over 250 submissions coming in, for the first round (a case study based competition) only 10 teams were selected for the final round. Subhadeep Bhattacharyya and Kapil Mendiratta‘s team, “Good for Nothing” from IMT Ghaziabad was shortlisted for the final round. The other 9 teams were from SJSOM, SIBM-Pune, MICA, IIM Trichy and NMIMS. Subhadeep Bhattacharyya was the runner up for the event and Kapil Mendiratta was placed 3rd.

The event kicked off with the unveiling of the trophy, by the guest of honour Mr. Sarath Krishnan, head of Sales Development, Marico. The first round was “Brand Switch” which judged the participant’s ability to think on the spot, where they had to pitch for a brand using the attribute of another totally unrelated brand. The second round was a quiz which marketing acumen. The final round found Kapil and Subhadeep, selling items on Juhu beach to random people at exorbitant prices. Begging, pleading and requesting, they used any and every resource at their disposal.

After a gruelling day 1, bottom 2 teams were eliminated. Day 2 was a formal case study round where a real life business case, about the declining sales of ‘Lenovo Yoga’, was to be analyzed and recommendations presented to the Marketing Manager of Lenovo, who was the judge for this round. Team Good for Nothing from IMT-Ghaziabad was adjudged the best team of the round and 4 teams were eliminated.

Other subsequent rounds tested bargaining skills, negotiation skills, and other aspects of sales and marketing. After 5 rounds, 8 teams were eliminated. Teams from IMT Ghaziabad and MICA were the final 2 teams. The concluding rounds saw the teams being split, and competition turning from a team event to an individual one. The 6th round required each participant to use shrewd strategy to devise a planogramming solution. The last event was a case study presentation. At the end of the 7 rounds and 3 gruelling days, results were announced. Subhadeep Bhattacharyya from IMT Ghaziabad was adjudged the runner up for the event and Kapil Mendiratta from IMT bagged the 3rd position.
